Jordan Designates Al-Maghtas as a 10-Square-Kilometre Nature Reserve 🇯🇴
Jordan’s Baptism Site, Al-Maghtas, is set to receive stronger environmental protection after the Cabinet approved its designation as a 10-square-kilometre nature reserve on October 20. The site will join Jordan’s National Network of Protected Areas.
Located along the Jordan River, Al-Maghtas is traditionally recognized as the place where Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015 and holds major religious, historical, and cultural significance.
The reserve will cover the main Baptism Site and surrounding natural areas, including Wadi Al-Kharrar and Wadi Gharaba, helping protect biodiversity while supporting sustainable ecotourism and local communities.
The decision comes as Jordan begins preparations for the 2,000th anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ in 2030, bringing renewed attention to one of the Kingdom’s most significant heritage sites. 🇯🇴
